Logos in the 2013 Durex Ad

I'll say this right off: I don't think there is logos anywhere in this ad. It was difficult to find ethos and pathos, let along try to see if there was some sort of logical appeal in this very simple advertisement. Perhaps that is what Durex is going for though. Simply, that it is just logical to wear a condom in order to avoid all of the consequences that sex can bring.

  1. Interesting. I would argue that the logic here is that, with durex, anything can be possible. I wonder what others think.

  2. I also think that their name alone is very logical. They didn't choose a sexy, gripping name but instead chose "durex". I think that this appeals to the logical side of everyone because above all we want our condoms to be durable.

  3. I agree with the comments before me. However if logos is indeed is used very little here, maybe it is for a reason. The reason could be to promote the association between fun and Durex. I say this because logic is usually not associated with fun. A lot of funny and fun things are illogical. As for me, I used to love to hear a professional wrestler called Scott Steiner talk on the mic. He was definitely not the most articulate but he was sure entertaining. - Jon E

  4. Julia, you make a very interesting point. I think the "logos" you are referring to in the advertisement creates a line between ethical appeal and an appeal to logic. The name "Durex" is a very well known and popular condom brand and fro this reason they have extrinsic ethos. However, at the same time we all know that the durability of a condom is a vital factor. I am not sure whether I agree with you that this establishes logos, because although the word itself has logos, the fact that they chose this specific name to represent their brand doesn't prove their their condoms actually are durable.

  5. I agree with blog, there is no logos in the ad. logos appeals to logic. I don't see anything that appeals to logic in the ad. The name Durex is more ethos, Durex is well known.

  6. I agree with the logos Julia brought up. Everyone wants their condoms to be durable. That's more of the appeal to common sense, a form of logic. Also, the ending quote, "Lights off. Action!" can be an an appeal through the use of words for people that rather have the lights off while they use their condoms...
